生產(chǎn)原料乳酸是從玉米淀粉制得，故也稱為玉米纖維，PLA纖維是在美國著名的谷物公司Cargill公司研制成功的玉米聚乳酸樹脂的基礎(chǔ)上，在1997年該公司和美國Dow Polymers公司合股成立了 Cargill Dow Polymers公司，全力發(fā)展了聚乳酸原料，到2002年聚乳酸年產(chǎn)已達14萬噸，生產(chǎn)的PLA纖維商品名為Ingeo。日本鐘紡、尤尼契卡和可樂麗公司生產(chǎn)的PLA纖維商品分別為Lactron、Terramac和 Plastarch，美國杜邦公司和孟山都等公司也開始開發(fā)PLA纖維。目前，商業(yè)化生產(chǎn)的PLA纖維是以玉米淀粉發(fā)酵制成乳酸，經(jīng)脫水聚合反應(yīng)制得聚乳酸酯溶液進行紡絲加工而成。PLA纖維之所以受到眾多纖維公司和消費者關(guān)注，并顯示強大的生命力，主要PLA纖維有許多突出的優(yōu)點：
（1）原料來自于天然植物，容易生物降解，降解產(chǎn)物是乳酸、二氧化碳和水，是新一代環(huán)保型可降解聚酯纖維。
（2）有較好的親水性、毛細管效應(yīng)和水的擴散性；
（3）模量和彎曲剛度是滌綸一半，故手感柔軟；
（4）有良好的回彈性、抗皺性和保形性；
（5）限氧指數(shù)較高（L0I 24-29），點燃后自熄性好、燃燒發(fā)煙量低，有較好阻燃性；
（6）有防紫外線能力，紫外線吸收率低；
（7）折射率低、染色制品顯色性好；
